Savvy by Ingrid Law

I just finished reading Savvy by Ingrid Law. This is a charming book about a 13 year old coming of age. The review below is taken from http://www.kidzworld.com/article/15667-savvy-book-review

When her father gets into a car accident, Mibs must use her savvy, or magical ability, to wake him from his coma. Check out Savvy, Ingrid Law’s award-winning first novel.

The Family Secret

For the Beaumont family, turning thirteen means more than becoming a teenager. It’s the age when they discover their savvy—a gift, almost like a superpower, that can be both a blessing and a curse. Mibs’s older brothers have dangerous, yet exciting, savvy’s: Rocket can control electricity and Fish can stir up a hurricane if he gets upset.
The Accident

Just before her thirteenth birthday, Mibs’s father gets into a car accident. Unconscious, he’s sent to Salina Hope Hospital. Mibs’s mother and her brother Rocket rush to Salina, leaving Mibs and her other brothers alone with Miss Rosemary, the preacher’s wife.

The Savvy

On the morning of her birthday, Mibs discovers her savvy—she can bring things to life. First, to her amazement, she wakes her brother’s turtle from the dead. Then the tattoo on Miss Rosemary’s daughter’s back starts talking to her! Mibs realizes that if she can bring things to life, then she can certainly wake her father from his coma…if only she can get to Salina.

The Getaway

Miss Rosemary insists on throwing Mibs a thirteenth birthday party at the church. But with her father’s life on the line, Mibs is in no mood to celebrate. During her party, she sneaks into a Bible delivery van that’s heading to Salina. But she doesn’t go alone. Her brothers, Fish and Samson, as well as Miss Rosemary’s kids, hop on for the ride. But they soon discover that the driver has a few stops to make before heading back to Salina. Will Mibs reach her father before it’s too late?

The Bottom Line

This book is an adventurous ride. Each character is unique, loveable and full of life. Told through the eyes of Mibs, this story captures the voice of a twelve-going-on-thirteen-year-old girl. The beginning is a bit slow, but when Mibs discovers her savvy, the story takes off and you won’t want to put the book down.
